Characteristics of Particle Size Distribution at the Roadside of Daegu

abstract
Abstract It is known that ultrafine particle emitted from the roads contains a lot of harmful components to human health.
In this study, number and mass concentration in roadside and residential sites were measured during winter of 2017 in Daegu.
A NanoScan Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS, 10~420 nm) and Optical Particle Sizer (OPS, 0.3~10 μm) were used to
measure the number concentration. A Dust aerosol monitor was used for particulate matter (PM) mass concentration monitoring.
The concentration of ultrafine particles at the roadside was highly fluctuated for a short term. Aitken mode (0.01~0.1 μm)
were higher than Accumulation mode (0.1~1 μm), which seem to be due to vehicle exhaust. The highest particle size distribution
of the ultrafine particle on the roadside was 0.04~0.05 μm. Particle number concentration was the highest from 6:00 a.m to
9 a.m. in rush hour and the maximum was 0.03~0.04 μm, whereas the minimum particle number concentration was observed
from 12 p.m to 6 p.m. The mass concentration of 0.3~0.4 μm was the highest in both roadside and residential area. Particles
greater than 1 μm at the roadside was 20% higher than the residential area. A strong correlation was found between the mass
and number concentration meter. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.96.
