Abstract

This research carried out to study on the characteristic of daily variation for ambient BTEX in Bucheon techno-park area by using the on-line GC-PID system. The average concentrations of BTEX in this study were : 2.13 ± 1.11 ppb, 15.33 ± 16.03 ppb,1.43 ± 1.64 ppb, 2.82 ± 2.75 ppb, and 0.50 ± 0.72 ppb, for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylenes, and o-xylene, respectively. The toluene concentration was very higher than the other compounds. The hourly variations were indicated that the toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylenes were increasing from 06:00 to 12:00 and sightly decreasing at nighttime except benzene.
The correlations between the concentrations of BTEX compounds were high, suggesting traffic as a common source. The benzene-to-toluene ratios were about 1:8. The measurement data for BTEX were fit by probability density function curves that the probability of exist in ambient benzene was estimated more about 50 percent at above 2.0 ppb (6.96 μg/m3) level. These level of benzene concentration was not only exceed the local guidelines but three times higher than the WHO recommended that the lifetime exposure to concentrations of 1.7 μg/m3 may cause 10 cases of leukaemia per million of inhabitants.
